The High John the Conqueror Root has always been near and dear to my heart, as well as a solid, go-to, addition for much of my work. Not only the root itself, but the Spirit contained within has helped me many times over with difficult problems, obstacles, and needs. Therefore, I was happy to hear, earlier this month, that Brother Ash of the Crossroads of Sorcery blog had written, and was gearing up to release, a physical copy (as well as e-book) entitled High John the Conqueror!
The way the subject matter is handled is a sure indicator that Brother Ash has, in fact, actually worked with the Spirit of High John and has been moved to write about his experiences. This is not merely a regurgitation of Wikipedia facts, but one practitioner’s views, notes, and recipes of actual workings.
The booklet includes sections on the history and legends of High John as an actual living man (as well as Spirit), the root itself, petitioning and offerings specifically used by Brother Ash, as well as recipes for mojo hands, oils, and spellwork. A detailed step-by-step on how to make jack balls is included, a real treat for anyone not already familiar with the jack ball and it’s makings.
The most valuable aspect of this book is the fact that it allows you a rare glimpse into how another practitioner views, approaches, works with, and honors, the Spirit of the High John the Conqueror Root. The ability to compare and contrast your own ideas with those of another, especially on a topic such as this, are important to furthering and strengthening your own practice and beliefs. Especially if done while researching and learning.
I recommend getting a copy of this booklet, especially if you are unfamiliar with, or just beginning to work with, High John the Conqueror. Experienced practitioners will also be interested in regards to the inclusion of numerous examples of spellwork, recipes, and insights.
It is a thrill to see more of these types of books getting written and put out and I hope to see more from this author in the future.
