spiritual guidance through the integration of science, nature, mythology, folklore, and the divine

Today more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal Responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to all other forms of life. ~ Dalai Lama, 1935

One day, during a hurricane, I was sitting outside.
We were not in the danger zone and I was grateful for the opportunity to observe.
It wasn’t raining and I watched the huge bands of clouds that made up this massive storm churning above me.

The Air felt different and distinct, thick and electrified.

It reminded me of my own swirling consciousness and I thought of the turbulence of storms,
within our hearts and minds;
within our blood and bones.

As the Rains inevitably came down,
I thought of canyons being carved by great rushing rivers;
of tiny streams offering an oasis to a microcosm of creatures;
of a ship at sea navigating the undulating expanse;
of great lakes and springs providing drinking water and agriculture.

As the Wind and Rain manifested their forces on the environment,
I thought of the ground beneath my feet;
how this rich and abundant surface has at its center a fiery core,
causing mountains to rise,
valleys to form,
and powering the magnetic field that surrounds our planet.

I thought of the Trees as they caught the Wind and drank the Rains,
roots firmly planted in the soil,
reaching ever towards that fiery source.

I thought about how we, the Kingdom of Animals, could not exist without the wind, rain, fire, and earth;
we could not exist without these forces that are outside of ourselves.

I thought about how we, the Kingdom of Animals, also contain the wind, rain, fire, and earth within us.

We are a world unto ourselves and we are part of the world at large.
We are phantasms of the planet; all parts of the Earth are represented within us.

When we are going through something intense in our life – physical, emotional, spiritual, or usually, some combination of all three – we are acutely aware of our individuality; that no one else is experiencing the same thing in the same way; that others understand up to a point, but they don’t really know how we feel.

When we are going through something intense in our life, positive or negative, we have the desire to be understood – in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer.

As individuals, we contain all the elements of the Earth and it is to the Earth that we must look in times of deep experience to find answers, wisdom, and solace. All of the answers to all of the questions that exist are right there in front of us and are meant to be discovered when we are ready to see them.

The purpose of this work is to learn from and incorporate aspects of the natural world into your spiritual practice, to feel connection and belonging, to tap into the beauty and power of Nature’s Spirit, to learn when and how Nature can assist us along our soul’s path. I’ve called this program Animalia because that is what we are and it represents our perspective of how we fit in to the great cycles of Nature.

“There are no random acts. We are all connected. You can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind.”

-Mitch Albom

“I meant to do my work today, but a brown bird sang in the apple tree, and a butterfly flitted across the field, and all the leaves were calling.”

-Richard le Gallienn

“The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with nature.”

-Joseph Campbell

You can come into this work with a general interest of deepening your spiritual relationship with Nature and incorporating this reverence into your everyday life.

You can come into this work from any religion or spiritual path that believes all of Creation, from rocks to humans, has value and meaning.

You can come into this work with a particular issue, something major that’s going on in your life at the moment, and we will focus on how you can get through this with the support of Mother Nature. Things like:

  • the birth of a child or an idea
  • the union of souls in romance, friendship, or business
  • the death of a person, relationship, or endeavor
  • the relocation of our physical home or business
  • the hardship of injury or illness
  • the ebb and flow of employment or career changes

We will work one-on-one over three months exploring all aspects of Nature, our Planet, the Elements, and our Senses:

  • Section 1: Geology – Fire – Touch
  • Section 2: Weather – Air – Smell
  • Section 3: Water – Water – Sound
  • Section 4: Plants – Earth – Taste
  • Section 5: Animals – Spirit – Vision

Through personal phone calls and emails, this work will be tailored to your needs at this time in your life; personalized to ask what you should consider and how you can apply what you read to your particular situation. You will also find insight from various professionals in the fields we will explore that will provide wisdom and balance between science and spirituality – a geologist, a musician, a perfumer, and a chef, to name a few. The material is such that, after our work together is finished, it can be revisited as needed. My role is to provide a framework for this process, help put it all in context with your daily life, and to give you dedicated guidance and support.

You are ready for this work if you:

  • Desire to bring the natural world into your spiritual practice.
  • Want to center your practice around the spirits of Nature.
  • Know that the answers, wisdom, and solace you seek are found in Nature.
  • Know that there are messages to be received from your encounters with Nature, in life and in dreams.
  • Have had an experience with one or more elements of Nature and want to understand the messages and context within your daily life.
  • Are experiencing one or more major life stressors – birth, marriage, separation, injury, illness, career change, relocation, etc. – and seek guidance from Nature in working through it.

This work is not:

  • The only way to learn how to work with our great Mother Earth; I do not proclaim this to be the one and only path of connecting with the natural world.
  • A course about shamanism or the belief system of any one culture. Almost every culture practices or has practiced some kind of belief in the power of Nature and my guidance will not focus on any one in particular.

Expectations and Practical Requirements:

  • You have some kind of contemplative practice, method of reflection, or way of quieting yourself; this is not a course in how to meditate.
  • I will give you a framework, guidance, and personal support throughout the process, but you must be ready and willing to read, research, meditate, and reflect on your own.
  • Participation is required, in the form of email correspondence and phone calls.
  • Refund policy – payment for this program is non-refundable. By signing up, you agree that you have the time and energy to engage in this work.

You Will Receive:

  • An initial phone call to get acquainted and two more check-in phone calls as we work through the material together
  • Two intuitive readings – one as we get started and one as we finish
  • An interactive PDF workbook delivered to your inbox every two weeks
  • Individual guided meditation by phone (recorded so you can repeat as needed)
  • Constant email access throughout our time together
  • Access to a secret Facebook group with Animalia alumni to discuss your experiences as a group, if desired
