Beautiful Autumnal Equinox

Hello again,

The air is getting crisper. The chill is evident. Leaves (even here in San Francisco) are starting to change and drop. It’s a Seasonal effect that has always been near and dear to my heart.

I was born and grew up in New England. Connecticut for the very first part of it, then Massachusetts and Vermont for the ages of 10-24. I was one of the few students who (just slightly more than most) didn’t mind the beginning of a new school year because it meant that Fall was quick approaching. I have yet to witness anything as remotely enchanting as a cool Fall dusk in rural Western Massachusetts.

Now, so many things have coalesced: the ending of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Hindu festival of Ganesha has just ended on September 15th. The Autumnal Equinox has happened and the wonderful Mabon/Harvest Moon Thanksgiving time is upon us! The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is September 29th. On top of that my life has gone through it’s own change. With all of this happening there seems to be a charge in the air. It sure FEELS like it! Perhaps the older I get the more these symbols of life have become more permanent, more tangible. The atmosphere gets thick with them.

It is usually about this time that I like to remind myself, and others, to go take a walk. As much as you can. Especially spiritually-minded people. Take a walk in and around whatever nature you can get to, be it your city’s parks or just out in your own backyard. Go experience the world around you, the automatically changing planet that gives you everything, and revel in it for a minute. We all know it’s out there, but sometimes we need to stand in the middle of it!

Tonight I will be attending a feast with friends, wine and warmth. We will greet each other, talk, philosophize, and ponder. We will eat—and we will drink. We will welcome this quiet, dark, hibernation with open arms! I sincerely hope you can do the same!

Bring on the candles, and pumpkins, and mead, and darkness… I am ready!
